Mold May Start in the Environment, But the Questions Often Extend to the Body

Mold is a natural part of the environment, but indoor mold growth can occur when excess moisture is present. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emphasizes that moisture control is central to controlling indoor mold growth and provides public guidance on identifying, preventing and addressing mold in homes and buildings.

For individuals concerned about exposure, however, finding mold can raise additional questions: What are mycotoxins? How might exposure affect health? How can someone evaluate both their home and their body? Why do some people continue to struggle even after the source of exposure has been addressed?

“People often focus on what is happening inside the body without first understanding what may still be happening in their environment,” said Corey Levy, CMI, CIE, Co-Founder of We Inspect and The Dust Test. “Looking at the building, potential exposure pathways and the health context together can provide a far more comprehensive picture.”

During Just Say No to Mold, Levy will discuss where mold may hide in homes, environmental exposure pathways, testing approaches and the importance of addressing the source of exposure.

Understanding Mold, Mycotoxins and Human Health

Mold refers to fungi that can grow in damp environments, while mycotoxins are naturally occurring compounds that can be produced by certain molds under certain conditions.

Jill Carnahan, MD, founder and Medical Director of Flatiron Functional Medicine in Boulder, Colorado, will address the medical side of the conversation, including mold and mycotoxins, potential health effects of exposure, testing and detoxification strategies, and why some individuals may continue to experience challenges after environmental exposure.

Carnahan’s expertise is also deeply personal. She has survived toxic mold illness, breast cancer and Crohn’s disease, experiences that helped shape her mission to empower patients dealing with complex health challenges.

“Mold-related illness can be complex because identifying the environmental source is only one part of the picture,” said Carnahan. “Education is critical so people can better understand exposure, reduce what they can control and have more informed conversations with their healthcare providers about what may be happening in their bodies.”

Carnahan collaborated with MDLifespan on the development of MDL Mold 5 and MDL Mold 5+, physician-directed protocols incorporating Advanced Serial Therapeutic Plasma Exchange alongside testing, nutritional support and strategies focused on reducing ongoing environmental exposure.

Where Therapeutic Plasma Exchange Fits Into the Conversation

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE) removes and replaces a patient’s plasma, where environmental toxicants and other circulating substances may be present, raising questions about its potential role in addressing environmental toxin burden.

TPE has long-established medical uses for specific neurologic, hematologic and autoimmune conditions. MDLifespan is studying and using a physician-directed, personalized approach to serial TPE focused on reducing circulating environmental toxicants and other targeted biomarkers.

MDLifespan’s approach begins with evaluation and testing. Physicians review a patient’s history, health goals and available biomarkers before determining whether an Advanced Serial TPE protocol may be appropriate.

“Mold is a perfect example of why we have to think about both exposure and what is circulating in the body,” said Savage. “The first goal should be understanding and reducing the source of exposure. From there, we can use testing and biomarkers to better understand the individual and determine what options, if any, should be considered.”

Savage will explain the fundamentals of TPE, MDLifespan’s approach to environmental toxin testing and how Advanced Serial Therapeutic Plasma Exchange is incorporated into its physician-led protocols.

Three Experts, One Mold Conversation

Just Say No to Mold connects two critical parts of the mold conversation: identifying potential exposure in the home and understanding how that exposure may affect the body.

The discussion will trace mold exposure from identifying potential sources in the environment to understanding possible effects on the body and evaluating options when health concerns persist.

Attendees will hear perspectives on questions including:

  • Where can mold hide in a home, and how can potential exposure be identified?
  • What is the difference between mold and mycotoxins?
  • How can environmental and human testing contribute to a clearer picture of exposure?
  • Why do some people continue to struggle after addressing their environment or trying traditional mold detoxification approaches?
  • When might Therapeutic Plasma Exchange be considered as part of a physician-directed approach?

The webinar will conclude with a live expert Q&A, and registrants may submit questions in advance.

Q: What is the difference between mold and mycotoxins?

A: Mold refers to fungi that can grow in damp indoor environments. Mycotoxins are naturally occurring compounds that can be produced by certain molds under certain conditions. Understanding both the environmental source of mold and potential exposure to mycotoxins can help individuals have more informed conversations with environmental and healthcare professionals.

Q: How can someone determine whether mold in their home may be affecting their health?

A: Evaluating potential mold exposure may involve looking at both the indoor environment and individual health. Environmental assessment and testing can help identify potential sources and exposure pathways in the home, while a healthcare provider can evaluate health history, symptoms and appropriate testing based on the individual.

Q: What is Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), and why is it being discussed in relation to environmental toxin exposure?

A: Therapeutic Plasma Exchange is a medical procedure that removes a patient’s plasma, replaces it with replacement fluid and returns the blood’s cellular components to the body. TPE has established medical uses for specific neurologic, hematologic and autoimmune conditions. MDLifespan is studying and using a physician-directed, personalized approach to serial TPE focused on reducing circulating environmental toxicants and other targeted biomarkers.

Q: Who is speaking at the Just Say No to Mold webinar?

A: Just Say No to Mold will feature Jill Carnahan, MD, founder and Medical Director of Flatiron Functional Medicine and Medical Advisor to MDLifespan; Paul Savage, MD, founder and CEO of MDLifespan; and Corey Levy, CMI, CIE, Co-Founder of We Inspect and The Dust Test. The three experts will address mold and mycotoxins from environmental and medical perspectives, including potential sources of exposure, environmental and human testing, detoxification strategies and Advanced Serial Therapeutic Plasma Exchange.

Q: When is the Just Say No to Mold webinar and how can people register?

A: MDLifespan’s free Just Say No to Mold educational webinar will take place Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 4 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. CT / 2 p.m. MT in recognition of Mold Awareness Month. The event will conclude with a live expert Q&A, and registrants may submit questions in advance. Those unable to attend live may register to receive access to the on-demand replay.
