DENVER, CO — MDLifespan announced the launch of Dr. Jill’s MDL Mold Protocol, a mold-focused protocol developed in collaboration with physician and mold-health expert Dr. Jill Carnahan. The approach incorporates Advanced Serial Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), individualized testing, and nutritional support.
The collaboration expands MDLifespan’s work in therapeutic plasma exchange for patients and practitioners interested in environmental toxin exposure, mold-related health concerns, biomarker evaluation, and personalized health strategies.
Why Is Mold Exposure an Important Environmental Health Concern?
Mold and dampness in indoor environments are important areas of environmental health research. People can encounter mold in homes, workplaces, and other buildings where moisture conditions allow mold to grow.
Patients and physicians may also have questions about potential relationships between mold exposure, mycotoxins, inflammation, respiratory symptoms, cognitive concerns, and other health issues. The scientific understanding of these relationships continues to develop, and individual symptoms can have many possible causes.
MDLifespan’s mold-focused approach is designed to evaluate environmental toxin burden and relevant biomarkers while incorporating physician oversight and individualized planning.

The MDL Mold Protocol
Dr. Jill’s MDL Mold Protocol was developed specifically around health concerns involving mold exposure and mycotoxins.
The protocol incorporates Advanced Serial Therapeutic Plasma Exchange, along with individualized testing and nutritional support. Therapeutic plasma exchange is an established medical procedure in which plasma is separated from blood components and replaced with an appropriate replacement fluid.
MDLifespan’s Advanced TPE approach is designed to evaluate and reduce certain substances circulating in plasma while providing physicians with biomarker information to help guide individualized protocols.
The original 2025 announcement described the MDL Mold Protocol as a next-generation approach to mold-related toxin reduction.
What Does the Research Say About Therapeutic Plasma Exchange and Toxin Reduction?
The collaboration followed the publication of a 2025 paper in Medical Hypotheses examining whether serial therapeutic plasma exchange combined with nutritional supplementation could reduce levels of synthetic chemicals in adults.
The study initially evaluated synthetic chemical levels in 91 healthy adults. A subset of 11 participants subsequently underwent three or five TPE sessions combined with nutritional supplementation, with follow-up testing at two weeks, six weeks, and six months. The researchers reported significant reductions in the measured synthetic chemicals following the intervention.
The authors characterized the findings as preliminary and called for larger prospective randomized controlled trials to further evaluate the potential benefits and risks of the approach.
The study provides scientific context for MDLifespan’s broader interest in therapeutic plasma exchange and environmental toxin burden, but it did not specifically establish that the MDL Mold Protocol removes a particular percentage of mold toxins.
“This protocol is transformative for patients suffering from mold-related illnesses,” said Dr. Paul Savage, founder and CEO of MDLifespan. “Until now, mold toxicity was a challenge to treat effectively. Our partnership with Dr. Carnahan has produced the first solution clinically proven to dramatically reduce mold toxin levels, enabling real recovery for patients.”
This statement reflects the original 2025 announcement.
A Collaboration Between MDLifespan and Dr. Jill Carnahan
Dr. Jill Carnahan collaborated with MDLifespan to develop the MDL Mold Protocol, bringing her clinical experience with mold-related health concerns together with MDLifespan’s therapeutic plasma exchange approach.
The protocol also incorporates a specially formulated nutrient powder intended for daily use as part of the broader protocol.
“I’ve spent years searching for truly effective solutions for my patients,” said Dr. Carnahan. “The MDL Mold Protocol offers not just symptom relief but deep cellular detoxification, addressing the root cause and allowing patients to reclaim their health.”
Advanced Therapeutic Plasma Exchange for Mold-Related Health Concerns
The MDL Mold Protocol represents MDLifespan’s mold-focused application of Advanced TPE.
The approach brings together several components:
- Advanced Serial Therapeutic Plasma Exchange to remove and replace plasma under physician oversight
- Biomarker and toxin testing to help evaluate relevant environmental exposures
- Nutritional support as part of the individualized protocol
- Physician-guided planning based on patient history, laboratory findings, and health goals
- Pre- and post-protocol testing, where appropriate, to evaluate changes in selected biomarkers
The approach is designed to provide a structured framework for patients and physicians considering environmental toxin exposure as part of a broader health assessment.
Where Is the MDL Mold Protocol Available?
At the time of the original announcement, Dr. Jill’s MDL Mold Protocol was available at Flatiron Functional Medicine in Boulder, Colorado, Dr. Carnahan’s clinic, with plans to roll out the protocol nationwide at MDLifespan locations beginning in July 2025.
Availability, terminology, and protocol structure may evolve as MDLifespan updates its Advanced TPE program.
